Chances Of Getting Astigmatism From Mother?

My wife has astigmatism from birth, I have a perfect vision, and now we are planning for kids. I worry about my kids being born with the defect.
What are the chances for that?
Any parents who have astigmatism yet the kids have good vision?

  1. AV says:

Astigmatism isn’t the end of the world, I assure you. It’s not considered to be a “defect”.
In “layman’s” terms, all astigmatism means is this — the lens of the eye isn’t round, but sort of football shaped.
There are degrees of severity, of course, however, most cases can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses.
I have some astigmatism, as does my husband. My vision is worse. Our children, ages 5 and 8, have good vision, so far.

  2. Well, you don’t really have any control over that. If it is genetic, your kids have a chance of having the problem. If it was prenatal, there is a good chance that they won’t.
I have astigmatism, but it developed over time. I wasn’t born with it.
