What Are Toric Contact Lenses?
Since toric contact lenses were introduced they have helped millions of people with astigmatism. Ophthalmic astigmatism is a refraction error of the eye in which there is a difference in degree of refraction in different meridians.
What this means is it makes it difficult for one to see fine detail and is usually caused because the eye is slightly misshaped along two curvatures making it difficult for the eye to form a clear picture of the object inside the eye. Studies have shown that one in three people suffer from it.
The toric lenses help correct the astigmatism by having two powers. They have different angle curvatures to correct near-sightedness, far sightedness and/or astigmatism. These different curvatures can cause the lenses to move around when one blinks so to prevent this toric contacts have a special stabilizing feature.
They also make toric contact lenses that are tinted so its easier to see. However, this tint will not change the color of your eyes.
Toric contacts come in both soft and rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses. Its best to consult with an eye doctor as to which you would be better off with. Of course there are other things to consider that the doctor could help you with. One is the cost.
Soft toric lenses cost more than the RGP contacts. There are also disposable toric contact lenses that come in dailys, weekly and monthly. The longer endurance of a lenses the more it will cost. Over the last few years manufacturers have been producing colored toric lenses.
Due to the nature of astigmatism getting fitted for toric contacts requires a bit more time and sittings. You will have to undergo a few more tests as compared to other routine lens users. However, don’t let that scare you, its no big deal. The eye doctor just needs to measure more of your eye because of the difference in curvature which causes astigmatism.
